This page provides access to the GENES program for analysis and management of pedigrees.GENES is most easily used as an accessory program to the SPARKS software for studbook management. SPARKS has been developed by ISIS (International Species Information System). GENES can also be used as a stand-alone program for pedigree analysis, if the pedigree data are first prepared as a dBase file in a specific format.
GENES is copyrighted, but is distributed without cost for the purpose of furthering conservation and research. Individuals and not-for-profit organizations are hereby given licenses for using GENES in research and conservation.Distribution of GENES is restricted to
- distribution by the Chicago Zoological Society;
- distribution by the International Species Information System as an accessory program for use with licensed copies of their software;
- downloading of the program from the Internet (GENES120.EXE) by individuals and not-for-profit organizations for their own research and conservation applications;
- redistribution without charge of the unmodified executable program (consisting of modules GENE.EXE, GENESIN.EXE, and GENESOUT.EXE, or as the self-extracting file GENES120.EXE) for the purposes described above.
Redistribution of GENES, in whole or in part, by any for-profit organization or for any profit-making purposes, is expressly forbidden.
GENES is available for downloading as a self-extracting file (GENES120.EXE) which provides the programs and brief documentation.At this time, the documentation for using GENES as a stand-alone program is relatively sparse. The program has been placed on the internet primarily so that experienced GENES users can readily obtain the latest version of the program.
Sample input and output files are available in the self-extracting program file SAMPLES.EXE)
Also available is the program PARTINBR for calculating partial inbreeding coefficients.
